Due to the growing population, an increase in the consumption and simultaneous release of pharmaceuticals can be observed worldwide. The most commonly observed drugs in freshwater ecosystems are diclofenac, ibuprofen, and carbamazepine. At relevant concentrations these compounds may have ecotoxic effects on aquatic organisms. In the course of my research, I selectively enrich, identify and isolate bacteria potentially capable of degrading carbamazepine, ibuprofen and diclofenac using classical microbiological and advanced molecular biological methods. To test the pharmaceutical biodegradation capacity of the isolates high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC / MS) is used. In the future, isolates showing biodegradation capacity could be used for the development of biotechnological tools to eliminate pharmaceutically active compounds from the wastewater.
